Whereas innovations are key factors for economic success, the increase of complexity in innovation processes, due to an internationalization of collaborations as well as to an increase in interaction between manufacturers and consumers, represents a major challenge for many companies. In this context Avatar-based Innovation Processes represent promising innovation drivers, as they provide a globally connected working environment for user-centred innovation processes. The use of Avatars and Virtual Worlds allows for an unprecedented form of web based collaboration during the entire innovation process. The paper provides a review of recent developments in Virtual Worlds, analyses how companies may exploit virtual environments and collaborate with Avatars during different stages of the innovation process, and underpins those alternatives with examples. increased customer satisfaction. In this context Avatar-based Innovations represent a new chapter of user-centred innovation processes, allowing for an unprecedented form of web- based collaboration along the entire innovation process chain. Avatar-based Innovation Processes (ABIP) involve the transfer of the innovation process into a Virtual World (VW), where users and manufacturer collaborate and interact during the entire innovation process (Kohler et al. 2011). When VW first emerged, about a decade ago, they have been advertised as " The next big thing " that will revolutionize the social media landscape and e-Commerce in general. However, VW did not turn into the virtual shopping- temples originally envisioned …

"Whose Second Life Is This?" How Avatar-Based Racial Cues Shape Ethno-Racial Minorities' Perception of Virtual Worlds
Research on social identity contingencies suggests that situational cues, such as a numerical representation of social identities in a given social environment, can trigger identity-associated threat for individuals whose social identity is marginalized. Given that popular virtual worlds (e.g., Second Life [SL]) are often criticized for White-avatar dominance or White bias, we examined the psyc...
متن کاملDecision Making in Virtual Worlds: An Experimental Test of Altruism, Fairness and Presence
Virtual worlds are gaining in popularity and are proposed as a test laboratory for the real world. In these virtual worlds users act via their avatars and make decisions for them. In this paper, we analyze the decision making in virtual worlds in an experiment conducted in a virtual world, as well as in the real world over the internet, for the same set of subjects. For this purpose, we develop...

The use of avatars as learning agents is becoming increasingly popular in the sports, education and military domains due to the rapid advance‐ ment in distributive technologies (e.g., internet, virtual worlds, etc.). When it comes to military and sports, Simulation-Based Training has proven to be cost-effective, due largely to restrictions on time, costs and safety [1]. As virtual reality and v...

Multi User Virtual Worlds provide a simulated immersive 3D environment that is similar to the real world. Popular examples include Second Life and OpenSim. The multi-user nature of these simulations means that there are significant computational demands on the processes that render the different avatar-centric views of the world for each participant, which change with every movement or interact...
